A Baldeira's Altarpiece
The most outstanding feature of this breastwork, carved in 1786, is the Baroque decoration in the form of modillions facing each other at its base. The altarpiece, which was polychromed, is presided over by the Holy Spirit in the form of a flying dove and immediately below is a friar dressed in a habit, helping to free the souls from the flames. Among the souls suffering from the fire are a woman and, crowned, a male figure that Fernández de la Cigoña identifies with the King of Spain. The central niche contains the main iconographic representation, with the almiñas suffering their sins amidst the flames. A bib or recipient, usually made of iron, collected the alms of the devout people. A more or less moulded base acts as the base of the altarpiece.
